Abstract
The matter content of the Universe is now known to high accuracy, and it is clear that a large amount of dark matter is needed. The properties of this dark matter are reviewed, and some particularly promising particle physics candidates are identified. The ways to detect particle dark matter are indicated, and in particular the potential of new and upcoming gamma-ray detectors are emphasized.
