ALICE
A Large Ion Collider Experiment at CERN LHC. I worked on the design of the electronic readout for the Silicon Drift Detectors (SDD) of the ALICE Inner Tracking System ( ITS ).
The SDDs readout is based on 4 ASICs designed in CMOS 0.25 µm technology with special layout techniques in order to increase the radiation resistance. The ASICs and their purposes are the followings :
PASCAL : pre-amplification, 40 MS/s sampling and analogue storage and 10 bit A/D conversion of the detector signal
AMBRA : baseline equalization, channel masking, data pre-compression and multi-event buffering of the detector data.
CARLOS : data compression and transmission to the DAQ system ( designed at INFN Bologna )
Dilbert : detector control system management
We have also used the general purpose ASICs developed at CERN for the clock, trigger and data transmission: DCU, GOL, QPLL, CRT4T and RX40. More details on these ASICs can be found here.
The ASICs have been designed and tested both in laboratory and on beam tests attached to the detector. The full production for the experiment ( 2400 PASCAL, 2400 AMBRA, 300 CARLOS and 300 Dilbert plus spares ) has been completed on September 2004. The chips are currently mounted on the detector in the ALICE Inner Tracker, ready for the LHC restart.
