I'm a WWS (World Wide Style) fellowship and I'm working in Antonaldo Diaferio's method to calculate the mass profile in the outskirts of galaxy clusters. We applied the caustic technique (Diaferio, 1999) for estimating the mass in the outkirts of galaxy clusters to a sample of simulated cluster of galaxies from N-body simulations, where galaxies form and evolve according to a semi-analitical model. By applying the caustic technique to a large sample of galaxy clusters we could perform a statistical analysis to evaluate the ability of this method to recover the cluster total mass profile. We found that the method is able to reproduce the true mass profile of these clusters, with even more accuracy when the number of lines of sight is increased; this suggest the presence of foreground and background structures. Comparing the distributions of dark matter and luminous matter in regions where dynamical equilibrium does not hold provides relevant constraints to the modelling of the formation of cosmic structure and to the nature of dark matter.
