SAMADHA - CHACALTAYA LABORATORY
NEUTRON SPECTROMETRY

At Chacaltaya, the neutron spectrum is measured by a Bonner sphere system, made of 3He neutron detectors inside 6 polyethylene spheres of diameter 80, 100, 120, 150, 170 and 200 mm, plus two extended energy range spheres with diameter 200 mm including lead or iron inserts.

The Bonner sphere system has been developed by the INFN Frascati group.

COUNTING RATE VARIATIONS

The picture shows the fractional variations of the hourly counting rate with respect to the average, for the eight spheres.
The data of the smallest sphere are represented by the lowest curve. The curves of the remaining spheres are ordered according to the sphere size and are shifted by one unit each.

LAST WEEK AVERAGE COUNTING RATES

The figure shows the last week average counting rates of the spheres as a function of the sphere diameter, compared with reference counting rates.
